How To Tackle The Herd Mentality To Avoid Self Sabotage

In my life i’ve faced some pretty hard situations …

Each offered unique opportunities to grow and develop myself as a person.

Along the way I’ve learned that these situations were essential to my success.

Sure they were hard. In some instances life threatening!

But they were necessary in making me who I am today.

As the late Steve Jobs once said,

“Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forwards when I was in college … but it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.

“Again, you can’t connect the dots looking forwards … you can only connect them looking backward.

“So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.

We are connecting dots every day. Our story is playing out in front of us.

And it’s a story of trials, tribulations, wins and loses.

It’s character building, and at times soul destroying.

But it is what it is.

It’s just life.

We can get buried in it … and we can be broken by it.

Or we can embrace it.

And we can grow as a result.

But whatever we do … usually, we need some support to get through …

Recently I was reminded of the importance of a supportive family around me. You have no idea how much the herd mentality rules your life until you try to change it.

When making big changes one of three things happens:

  1. You’re forced to leave people behind
  2. You try to bring those you love with you
  3. You self sabotage to remain with your herd

Making changes … especially trying to change big aspects of your life. Your health, your wealth, or your career … you will get met with some sort of resistance.

Resistance from family members when you work too much.

Resistance from friends when you start going to the gym instead of meeting up for beers at the pub.

Resistance from your partner when you try to budget to save money for investments or retirement.

Anything in my life that I have tried to change has been met with some form of resistance.

I’m sure you’ve all experienced something similar.

So how do you overcome the herd mentality?

What can you do to avoid disappointing the people you care about?

This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to face.

Throughout my life there have been times when I had to leave people behind who were holding me back.

Friends … people I loved!

What is the true meaning of a friend to you?

Someone very wise once told me,

“A friend is a person who sees more potential in yourself than you do … and then goes out of their way to help cultivate and support it.”

Makes sense right?

When I heard this, I was going through a massive growth phase in my life.

And I’ll be honest … it made me question many of my friendships.

The result.

I started to only hang around people who saw potential in me and help me to cultivate it.

I chose who and where to give my energy wisely.

Because my life depended on it!

If you’re struggling to make the important changes in your life … maybe you need to evlauate who you spend the most time with.

Maybe, just maybe … you need a new herd!

To your limitless success,
