Since the age of 48 Vasco has had a serious heart condition. After suffering from 2 heart attacks himself and sadly, losing his brother to a heart attack at age 51, it was very important for him to regain control of his health and fitness.

“I first joined Unity after losing 30kg by myself (through diet alone) however, my weight loss had began to plateau and I didn’t know what I needed to do to progress further. I was told that my calorie consumption was dangerously low (only 700 a day) and Rad and Yani feared I would suffer adverse health effects unless something changed. They advised me to have a DEXA Scan and from this they worked out exactly what my daily calorie intake should have been (which was more than double what I had been eating!). I started a conditioning program which was designed for me and I also attended the Group Training sessions. This is kind of a big deal… and all thanks to hard work and dedication to her training and nutrition program.
The reason Jess started a personal training program with us, was because “I had been diagnosed with insulin resistance and was told that it could be reversed if I lost weight.”
Insulin resistance is when the body becomes unable to store glucose in the correct way, causing an elevation in blood sugars, which if left untreated can lead to Type-2 Diabetes. Other than exercise the only method to control blood glucose is medication, which is easily prescribed by practitioners. The action of these medications prevents weight loss, so for someone like Jess, losing weight becomes that much more difficult.
Jess says, “I had spent all this money on specialists and hadn’t seen results until I started at Unity, they were the first people to actually help me make progress. Not only that; they encouraged a lifestyle change for real long-term management.” Since training with us, Jess has achieved more than she first thought she could… even overcoming her fear of jumping on the scales.

I first came to Yani having been offered a role in the Australian feature film Hating Alison Ashley. Playing the lead character, Erica Yurkin, required me to put on weight. On completion of the role Yani helped me lose the character weight in a safe, fun and healthy environment. I was thrilled with the dramatic and rapid results. I started training with Rad in the first week of August 2012. My first Dexascan showed my starting weight was 80.8kg and my body fat was 23.2%. My goal was, and still is, to get my body fat down to 12% and increase muscle mass. Rad and Yani designed a 12 week conditioning program and a calorie counted eating program for me (believe me it is delicious and healthy and it works!).
At the end of the conditioning program (end of October), I went for my second Dexascan. My weight was down to 72.3kg and body fat was 18.8%. In the 7 weeks since my last scan my weight has continued to drop (69.6kg now in mid December) and my body has shape and definition which was non-existent when I started. I am excited to see what results I am going to see in my next Dexascan in 5 weeks time.
I was wearing size 33-34 in pants when I started and I am now in 30-31. I have seen a huge change in my body shape as well as my posture (no more slouching) and I am constantly getting compliments from friends and family about how good – and more importantly, how healthy – I am looking.
It is not just the physical change that I have noticed either. Rad and Yani are both very supportive and helpful (even when it’s not your PT session you can still ask for help), they celebrate your successes with you and are genuinely decent guys who care about their clients. Rad has helped me build the mental strength to push myself further than I ever did before. This has had a knock on effect in all areas of my life, I feel like I am mentally tougher and stronger and I can take on anything.

Personal training clientI started training with Rad Burmeister in June 2012. At that time, my fitness levels were very low as I had to stop regular exercise due to a hamstring strain and problems with my lower back. I weighed 87kgs, which meant that I was carrying about 14kgs excess weight.
The first thing that Rad did was to individually assess my physical condition and he then devised an exercise program that would build up my flexibility, aerobic fitness and muscle strength to ensure that I did not injure myself when the training sessions increased in their intensity.
Rad also stressed the importance of the combination of diet and exercise. He recommended that I should have a DEXA (Total Body Composition) Scan done which gave a detailed breakdown of my muscle and fat content, bone mineral density and provided a very accurate calorie intake required for me to attain my ideal weight goal of 73kgs. Rad then designed a diet for me with the correct intake of protein, carbohydrate and fat that would combine with his exercise program to help attain my goal weight of 73kgs.
The exercise program increased in intensity every week and every four weeks, Rad changed the program depending on the focus on cardio, endurance, strength and muscle building. This also ensured that I did not get bored with the program and, more importantly, I got an all‐round exercise routine that dramatically increased my flexibility, cardio fitness and strength.
In early July 2012, the DEXA Scan showed that I had lost almost 5kgs and I had increased my muscle content by almost 2kgs, which meant I had lost around 7kgs of body fat. Two further DEXA Scans showed that, by the end of September 2012, I had lost a further 2kgs and by mid December 2012, I had lost a further 2.5kgs and increased my bone mineral density. My fitness and strength have increased dramatically. When I started, I could not do even one dead pull up (pull up after hanging with arms fully extended and both feet off the ground). I can now do four to five of these. My osteopath commented that my back was “in the best condition he had seen”.
In October 2012, I had normal blood tests done which showed that my total cholesterol level was quite high. My GP advised me to discontinue my diet and go on to medication to reduce my cholesterol levels. Rad put me in touch with Dr Ross Walker, one of the leading cardiologists in Australia, who analysed my situation and had me undertake Arterial Screening and CT Calcium Scoring tests. These tests proved that I was in the lowest risk category for coronary artery disease and as a result, I did not need to change my diet or take medication that in fact would have had undesirable side effects. Dr Walker also confirmed that there was no reason to change the diet recommended by Rad.
At the time of writing this testimonial, I weigh 75kgs, even after a break in exercise over the Christmas and New Year period. I have 2kgs to lose to attain my goal weight. I cannot thank Rad enough for helping me. There is no doubt that without his expertise and guidance, I would not have been able to achieve these results.
