March Member Of The Month Is A War Veteran And A Legend Of A Bloke!

There’s always a great story behind our member of the month. A story of motivation and heroics. On a daily basis, we prove that everyday people can become heroes in their own world and instigate change that only a very small pocket of society ever manage.
But Alistair Scott is what most people would call a genuine, full blown hero … his time in the ADF included four overseas deployments to Afghanistan and East Timor dropping feet-first into dangerous war zones as a paratrooper.
During one of his more recent deployments he suffered a serious parachute accident. The extent of his injuries were shocking. Alistair suffered multiple fractures to his ankles, knees, back and neck. Repairing his body required major surgical intervention, including removing one of the discs in his spine.
Having two ex-infantry soldiers (Rad and Richard) as partners of Unity Gym, we naturally welcomed the opportunity to help rehabilitate Alistair’s injuries and rebuild his strength and mobility.
Rad and the boys had a blast catching up with Al recently to chat about his story. Here’s what they had to say.
So Al, what made you decide you wanted or needed to start at Unity Gym?
“Over the period of 2012 – 2015 I had to have 8 surgeries as a result of my service in the ADF. All on various joints in my body including my neck and back. I got to the point with my rehab where I needed to progress beyond what was provided by regular physiotherapy.
I had heard of functional movement training and I was also interested in the benefits of calisthenics. I did my research and Unity seemed a perfect fit for me. I sent an email detailing my history, and got an immediate call-back from Rad – the rest is history!”
Mate you are a walking miracle … seriously! Why don’t you tell us a bit about what do you like most about the FMS program here at Unity Gym?
“The Foundation Movement System incorporates every aspect required to achieve better movement. That being the development of muscular strength and endurance, core strength and overall fitness that promotes optimal health.
“It’s fantastic for both physical and mental health in my view.
“Another strength is the educational aspect of the program. It provides a lot of overall lifestyle knowledge, which is why the program works so well. The education has benefits that are prevalent across all aspects of your life.”

Considering the extreme extent of your injuries, you’ve overcome a lot to achieve some big results since starting your training with us in December 2016.
Can you share what you have achieved?
“Absolutely, since starting three months ago I’ve lost just over 5kg of fat, gained a lot of core and overall strength, become heaps more flexible and, probably most importantly, I have experienced a huge reduction in joint pain.”
Wow, that’s fantastic mate. I think it’s important at this stage to remind everyone of the severity of your injuries.
Because I’m sure there’s lot’s of people out there reading this who are sitting on the couch in pain, who might have back or neck issues, and think they can’t lose weight or start an exercise program anymore, due to their injuries.
I’d say you are proof that’s definitely not the case.
Thank you for sharing … I think that in itself might be enough to get a few more people active and motivated.
Would you quickly tell us what you like best about our facilities and trainers?
“Absolutely, the facilities seems to be perfectly designed for the FMS program offered, and there is the exact equipment you need for each workout, which is in excellent condition.
“In addition, the trainers are all very knowledgeable, approachable, great motivators and have an excellent eye for detail. They set the example and are all very friendly.
Unity has a real community feel to it.”
What would you say to someone on the fence about joining?
“Do yourself a favour and join. It will change your life for the better and you will achieve things you never thought possible!”
Before we rap this up, is there anything else you’d like to add?
“My daily sessions at Unity are the highlight of my day. The people are awesome and the atmosphere sets the conditions that makes you want to push yourself harder to achieve your goals.
“I am looking forward to seeing the longer term results, and I am confident that I will achieve some big goals, thanks to the team, facilities and equipment at Unity.
“Thankyou so much for the opportunity to improve my overall health and wellbeing. This has made me so much more optimistic about my future after all the surgery i’ve had to have.”
